What is Kinesiology?

Traditionally, the word "Kinesiology" refers simply to the study of muscles and body movement. Applied Kinesiology is based on the idea that the body is an interacting unit made of different parts that interconnect and affect each other. Everything we do affects the body as a whole; therefore, a problem in one area can cause trouble in another. According to Kinesiology, the muscles eventually register and reflect anything that is wrong with any part of the body, whether physical or mental. Thus, a particular digestive problem might show up in the related and corresponding muscles of the legs. By testing the strength of certain muscles, the kinesiologist claims to be able to gain access to the body's communication system, and, thus, to read the health status of each of the body's major components.
The manual testing of muscles or muscle strength is not new, and was used in the late 1940s to evaluate muscle function and strength and to assess the extent of an injury. Applied Kinesiology measures whether a muscle is stuck in the "on" position, acting like a tense muscle spasm, or is stuck "off," appearing weak or flaccid. It is called manual testing because it is done without instruments, using only the kinesiologist's fingertip pressure. During the first and longest appointment, which lasts about an hour, the kinesiologist conducts a complete consultation, asking about the patient's history and background. During the physical examination, patients sit or lie down, then the kinesiologist holds the patient's leg or arm to isolate a particular muscle. The practitioner then touches a point on the body which he believes is related to that muscle, and, with quick, gentle, and painless pressure, pushes down on the limb.
Patients are asked to resist this pressure, and, if they cannot, an imbalance is suspected in the related organ, gland, or body part. This diagnostic technique uses muscles to find the cause of a problem, and is based on traditional Chinese medicine and its idea that the body has common energy meridians, or channels, for both organs and muscles. Kinesiologists also claim that they are able to locate muscle weaknesses that stem from a variety of causes such as allergies, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, as well as from problems with the lymph system. Once the exact cause is determined, the kinesiologist uses his fingertips to work the appropriate corresponding acupressure points in order to rebalance the flow of energy and restore health. Often he will recommend a complementary program of nutrition therapy.
This History of Kinesiology
In 1964, American chiropractor George J. Goodheart founded what has become known as applied Kinesiology when he linked oriental ideas about energy flow in the body with western techniques of muscle testing. First, Goodheart noted that all muscles are related to other muscles. He observed that for each movement a muscle makes, there is another muscle or group of muscles involved with that movement; one muscle contracts while another one relaxes. So when he was presented with a painful, overly tight muscle, he would observe and treat the opposite, and necessarily weak, muscle to restore balance. This was then a very new technique.
Further, Goodheart argued that there is a definite and real connection between muscles, glands, and organs, and that by testing the strength of certain muscles he could learn about the health or condition of the gland or organ to which it was related.
Muscle Testing: Asking and trusting our biology of knowing
The average person thinks between 300-1000 thoughts per minute. Every thought we think either produces a healthy, or an unhealthy rhythm within our heart, brain and body, and if you think you know where all your thinking begins, think again. In 1991 Dr. J. Andrew Armour first introduced the concept of the heart having ‘a little brain of its own.’ Since that time Heartmath Institute researchers in Boulder Colorado have discovered that ‘the little brain within the heart,’ or cardiac intrinsic ganglia is the first brain to determine how we feel about our thoughts and converts them into either healthy, or unhealthy rhythms. The intrinsic cardiac ganglia then transmits these rhythms to the brain so that the brain may forward them on to the body. Every thought we think either programs our nervous system for relaxation, or stress.
Positive thoughts produce a relaxation rhythm that is referred to by Heartmath researchers as ‘entrainment.’ Entrainment suggests that the neuro-electricity generated from the intrinsic cardiac ganglia to the brain and the body is on track and flowing smoothly. Entrainment represents our most relaxed, healthy, functional, efficient self.
On the other hand, even the subtlest negative thoughts produce a stress response that is referred to as dis-entrainment. This means that the neuro-electricity generated from the cardiac intrinsic ganglia, to the brain and body is de-railed and fragmented. Dis-entrainment represents our most stressed, unhealthy, dysfunctional, emergency driven self. Research tells us that it only takes 7/10 of a second for our heart’s brain to shift back and forth between entrainment, and dis-entrainment.
Our entire nervous system transits through our muscles. Varying degrees of strength and weakness are pre-determined by entrainment and dis-entrainment. Whether our thoughts make us weak or strong, the information transits from our cardiac intrinsic ganglia to our brain our nervous system and finally to our muscles. Therefore, one easy way to determine whether we are entrained, or dis-entrained is by testing muscle strength.
By merely suggesting a variety of positive and negative words and images to a subject such as: 9/11, or love; the unbiased subject will present with varied muscular strength that corresponds with the images in mind. Positive images will generate greater entrainment flow patterns that will strengthen the muscles, and negative images will dis-entrain nerve flow and therefore weaken muscular strength. Will the subject’s muscles respond in kind when presented with words and images less obvious? The answer is yes! The intrinsic cardiac ganglia, brain and nervous system are geared to react to all stimuli! Every site, sound, word, image and dream will produce a unique entrainment, or dis-entrainment response within every living person. Questions may be asked of the subject regarding the health of their organs, receptivity to specific foods, or food supplements, even the amount, frequency and duration of regarding the given food, or food supplement’s consumption. Again, every body-mind will react with either an entrained, or dis-entrained muscle response.
Our biology remains neurologically engaged in risk assessment every day of our life throughout our entire life. Our cardiac intrinsic ganglia, brain and body (nerves and muscles) are like a radar defense system that receive and transmit messages about our subtlest, most personal, individualistic feelings regarding virtually every thought that crosses our mind. Simply put, our hearts and nervous systems have an opinion about absolutely everything. We might think of this system as a voice of wisdom deep within awaiting our affirmation and trust. We have much to learn from our precious biology of knowing.
Vibrational Kinesiology Test:
Long before time and space existed in the cosmos there was only primordial vibration. The life force generated by primordial vibration then vivified the entire universe, and gave birth to time and space. This same vibration set into motion the reciprocal cyclogeny of all energy and matter, and remains therefore the source of all life and criteria for all wholeness.
All healing is based on wholeness. All systems of energy healing are based on the concept that disharmony, or disease is the result of a blocking of the life force that creates wholeness. The energy hierarchy sequences as follows: 1. particle 2. atom 3. DNA 4. molecule 5. cell 6. tissue 7. organ 8. organism. Vibration is the common thread that runs through the fabric of the entire energy hierarchy; the essence of vital energy that brings life force to all things.
Vibrational energy is the manifest life force that constantly seeks to enter into the human field. Personal thoughts and intentions are the root source of this vibrational energy. Our most predominant thoughts and intentions create a reality producing vibration that seeks to flow into our life force field in order to fuel our transformations. Receptivity to such vibration produces harmony and denial produces disharmony. Thus, whenever testing an individual for disharmony patterns with the intention of assembling a healing protocol it is essential to begin at the vibrational root. If not, the energetic blockages will at best respond to the healing protocol with some temporary shifting, but will continue to manifest as core blockages affecting the entire energy hierarchy.
